He is also a two times cancer survivor and founder member of the Love Hope Strength Foundation. He can also lay claim to holding the record for the world's highest concert when in October 2007 he lead a team of world re-knowned musicians to perform a unique concert above base camp Mount Everest at 18,500 feet.

His music roots are in the punk soundclash of the late 1970's. In 1976, he stared into the eyes of Johnny Rotten at an early Sex Pistols show in Chester and was inspired to start his first band The Toilets. Throughout 1977, the band ripped into the UK punk scene supporting both The Clash and the Buzzcocks before imploding into the Alarm in 1981. The Alarm have since scored 17 UK top 50 singles a host of successful albums and millions of record sales worldwide.

A Welsh band first and foremost, The Alarm made their name in America in early 1983 opening for Bono and U2 on their 'War Tour'. The Alarm scored their first hit overseas with 'The Stand', before similar success followed in the UK with their signature tune 'Sixty Eight Guns'.

Throughout the Eighties, The Alarm stayed at the top of their game, playing to 25,000 fans at the first ever live satellite broadcast from Los Angles in 1986, they also appeared at Wembley Stadium, London with Queen and were the first ever Welsh band to perform at Cardiff Arms Park in 1987.

The Alarm continued to gain increasing critical and artistic success in the USA touring with rock and roll beat poet Bob Dylan. Dylan (who took his surname from Welsh poet Dylan Thomas), would often invite Welshman Mike Peters on stage to sing 'Knocking On Heavens Door'.

In late 1989, another rock legend, the one and only Neil Young also joined Mike Peters and the Alarm on stage in New York to sing 'Rockin' In The Freeworld'.

The Alarm continued to create challenging and inspiring music into the new decade with the timeless 'A New South Wales', sung with the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir in both English and Welsh.

Released as a double A-side, the record was also the first ever Welsh language song to make the UK Top 40.

With the release of the subsequent album 'Change' / 'Newid', the Alarm provided inspiration to a whole generation of Welsh bands to adopt a bi-lingual approach to music, opening up a way forward to the many that have since followed in The Alarm's footsteps.

1991's 'Raw', was the last record to feature the original line-up of the band who played a final show at Brixton Academy in June 1991. Since then, the band's legacy has been continued by Mike Peters whose solo' career began with the release of 'Breathe' in 1994 (which debuted at number 5 in the U.K. independent charts).

A second album, 'Feel Free' documented Mike Peters' first battle with cancer (Non Hodgkins Lymphoma). Rejecting conventional treatment, Mike Peters continued to tour and went to see a faith healer instead. Upon being told that 'green' was a powerful colour in his life, Mike Peters wore green combat fatigues every day (off stage and on), until he eventually went into spontaneous remission in 1997.

In recent times, Mike Peters has not only had to fight for his life but fight equally hard to keep his band The Alarm as current and up to date as possible. In 2000 he put a new version of The Alarm together with his current musical cohorts James Stevenson (Gen X) on guitar, bass guitarist Craig Adams (Sisters Of Mercy / The Mission) and Steve Grantley (Stiff Little Fingers) on drums.

Beginning from less than zero, this new version of The Alarm has defied the odds and gone from strength to strength building a reputation for all out shows and confounding critics with new and challenging music. The seeds for this Alarm renaissance were sown in 2004 when The Alarm released the controversial '45 R.P.M.' under the pseudonym 'The Poppy Fields' which entered the UK charts at number 27 and immediately became the subject of an international news story.

The furor centered around the fact that The Alarm's identity had been kept hidden from the media and instead a stand-in group of 18 year old musicians appeared in the video.

'45 R.P.M.' was played extensively throughout the UK and was championed by unsuspecting DJ's and critics as the first release by a brand new band. It was only after the song entered the charts that Mike Peters and The Alarm revealed the true identity of 'The Poppy Fields', thus causing a storm of worldwide media speculation. The band even featured on prime time America's CBS News with Dan Rather.

The band's most most recent chart success came from the album 'Under Attack' which opened up with the incendiary hit single 'Superchannel' which went top 30 in February 2006.

Another darker dimension was added to this already emotive Alarm record when Mike Peters was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL), just before it's official release in December 2005.

Although devastated and reeling from the fact that he would have to undertake a heavy schedule of chemotherapy, Mike Peters vowed to carry out all his duties as front man of The Alarm.
In between monthly chemo sessions he played every show booked in the UK and even managed two trips to the USA including a very emotional and uplifting performance at The Joey Ramone Lymphoma Research Benefit Concert in New York City.
Whilst in New York Mike Peters received the news his family and Alarm fans worldwide had been hoping for when he was declared to be in remission.

Since then Mike Peters has formed his own cancer charity Love Hope Strength Foundation taking the fight against cancer to new heights. Throughout 2007, He has performed concerts on top of the Empire State Building, on the summit of Snowdon and more recently Everest Rocks, raising some £40,000 for local cancer centres in North Wales and over $250,000 for the Nepal Cancer Relief Society.

VH-1 Bands Reunited: 28th October 2003 at The Scala, London

Rehearsal performing 'Marching On' and the concert performance of 'Sold Me Down a River'

Final song in the live set: Blaze of Glory.

VARIOUS LIVE VIDEOS OF MIKE PETERS & THE ALARM

Burnout Syndrome (Live) - The Alarm & No Frontiers - Mike Peters 1986

Rockin the Colonies Tour

Rockin the Colonies Tour - Irving Plaza July 13th 2008. Someone was on hand to record a few of the songs from the set (such dedication) and what you get is a real feel for the atmosphere and sheer joy of Mike performing with a fine set of backing singers (I see a Gathering Choir in my Crystal Ball!).

The Stand & Rescue Me

Marching On & Rain in the Summertime

45RPM

PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS

Close - The Alarm Promo Video (2003) & The Stand - The Alarm (1985)

Rain in the Summertime - The Alarm & Spirit of '76 - The Alarm (Full Version)

68 Guns - The Alarm & Rescue Me - The Alarm

Be Still - The Alarm & Without a Fight - The Alarm from 'Under Attack' album

'Gun to My Head' - The Alarm. Solution? a three inch disc! With three songs! This one featured "The Stand" and two live tracks: "Lie Of The Land" and a Who cover, "A Legal Matter." The live tracks, which were originally broadcast live on WLIR-FM are a little uneven, but still show the finesse of a great band.

SIXTY-EIGHT GUNS CD3
A&M/IRS CC31015 (Released 1989)
CD3
Produced by Alan Shacklock
Engineered by Chris Porter (except* Kevin Kelly)
Track 3 Recorded At My Father's Place, Long Island, NY, 28 Sep 1983
Compiled by John Guarnieri
Photography by Stephen Oliver
Digitally Remastered by Mike Reese

Musicians:
Mike Peters Guitar, Harmonica & Lead Vocals
Dave Sharp Guitar & Backing Vocals
Eddie MacDonald Bass & Backing Vocals
(Nigel) Twist Drums & Backing Vocals

Track Listing:

Sixty-Eight Guns (MacDonald/Peters) 3:16

The Chant Has Just Begun (MacDonald/Peters/Sharp) 3:41

Marching On* (MacDonald/Peters) 5:58

The second CD3 from The Alarm is somewhat more satifying than its predescessor. The Lead-off track (the terrific "Sixty-Eight Guns") is followed by the non-LP "The Chant Has Just Begun", a tune in which the opening chant grabs the listener and doesn't let go until it fades out. The CD3 closes with a live version of "Marching On" which was origianlly broadcast on WLIR-FM. Audience participation shows just what a terrific live show these guys put on!

Singles

Year
Once again, the song worked brilliantly on stage but once placed under the microscope of the finely balanced studio speakers it became clear that we needed to strip the electric guitar into sections, as different sounds would be required for different parts. We played live to capture a stirring bass and drum performance from Owen and Emyr and then Slug layered the guitars over the top. At least four different guitars were used for the recording and they all come together in the latter half of the song. Having the freedom to experiment in the studio is essential and in making this, my first record, as an 'independent' artist, it was a relief not to have the corporate pressure of release deadlines. Instead, I had the time to stand back and evaluate artistic decisions properly and if I felt I'd made the wrong choice I could then go back and correct my mistake. This is the first time in my recording career that I have been able to do this. You don't know how good it feels."
(21st Century Fanzine #2)

New Chapter

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Train A Comin'

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

The Message

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

This is War

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Into the 21st Century

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Beautiful Thing

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Levis and Bibles

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

What The World Cannot Give Me

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Spiritual

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Who's Gonna Make The Peace

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Breathe (Lyrics)

breathe the air
I watch the sun
Rise and fall
In twenty-four hours
I breathe

Silver rivers reflect the sun
On black highways I will be done
Mile on mile?of empty heat
I will wait for you...
I will not look back

Chasing shadows all night long
Indian nation...? I heard Jules singing the melody and was immediately hooked. I used my position as leader of the band (!) and 'nicked' the song, adding an acoustic guitar riff and harmonica. Having been a collaborator with Eddie MacDonald on many songs during my time with The Alarm, it was good to work in this way. Trading ideas with other people is healthy and although I am now a 'solo' artist, I don't want to isolate myself too much and I hope to collaborate more in the future. The idea of using 'Breathe' as the title track came late into the recording sessions. There were many working titles, but the lines that most expressed the artistic and personal freedom I now feel, seemed to come from the chorus of 'Breathe'."
(21st Century Fanzine #2)

Other
Some lyrics are lifted from the unreleased Mike Peters solo song "Ride On Angel"

All I Wanted

All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you

I was a stranger moving from place to place
Driven by a need for something I could not explain
I was lost in a no mans land between night and day
Travelling a road that was leading me astray
Every time I tried to find it (tried to find it)
Every time I tried to find it I'd lose my way

All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you

I've been down to the crossroads many times
I've been north, south, east and west in my life
And the train kept a rollin'
A thunderin' down the miles
And the train kept a rollin' all day and night
Every time I tried to find it (tried to find it)
Every time I tried to find it I'd lose my way

All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you

All I wanted was you

A whispered name...A naked flame...
Imagination...Wide awake
I lost my way until you saved me
All I ever wanted was you

All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All that I wanted
All that I needed
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you
All I wanted was you

General
Recorded at Sain Studios, Llandwrog, Wales
Produced by Mike Peters
Mixed by Risteard O'Monaigh & Field Marshall Slug
Engineered by Gethyn Evans

Mike Peters & The Poets:
Mike Peters - Guitar & Vocals
Field Marshall Slug - Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar & Backing Vocals
Jules Jones - Piano, Keyboards & Backing Vocals
Brychan Llyr - Rhythm guitar, mandorin & backing vocals
Emyr Penlan - Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals

Mike Peters
"'All I Wanted' was again written at an early stage and has already developed into a huge favourite at the shows. This is the hardest type of song to record in the studio; everyone has an expectation. Live, 'Wanted' usually featured in the latter stages of the show when the adrenaline between band and audience is really high and consequently the tempo of the song would be pushed to the limit. Aware of the 'expectation,' our main concern was to record the song at a tempo that would suit everyone; fast enough to satisfy, yet subtle enough to make sense inside the body of a recorded album. I spent hours listening to sound-board tapes and bootlegs and cross-referencing the live tempos from small gigs such as King Tuts in Glasgow to larger halls like the Empire in Shepherds Bush. Once the tempo had been set the song was recorded in virtually the first take. When sequencing a record as opposed to a live show a different set of dynamics comes into play. Firstly, most people do not possess a stereo system as loud as a concert p.a. system and so the excitement has to register in other ways. The Rolling Stones used to say that all their production time went into the first few seconds of a record, because if you didn't grab the listeners' attention straight away, it's easy for them to become distracted and lose interest. With this in mind, I thought 'Poetic' and 'Wanted' made for the perfect start to the album and if you are one of the few people to have a P.A. system in your bedroom, then be warned, these songs are very loud and in the case of 'Wanted,' very fast."
(21st Century Fanzine #2)

Poetic Justice

What on earth is this world a coming to
What on earth is going down
What on earth is happening to us
Is everything I feel poetic justice

What happened to our better world a comin'
What happened to our brave new vision
What happened to our dream of the future
Is everything I see poetic justice

Can you hear it on the ghetto
The spray cans speak
In confession whispered to a priest

Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic justic

(What you gonna do now)
What you gonna do now everythings changing
(What you gonna say now)
What you gonna say now it's all over
(Where you gonna hide)
Where you gonna hide now the storm's broken
Is every word I write poetic justice

Is this the armageddon?
Or the apocalypse?
Revenge for the judas kiss?

Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic justice

Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic justice
Written across my heart
Written inside my mind
Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice
Poetic Poetic Poetic Justice

General
Recorded at Sain Studios, Llandwrog, Wales
Produced by Mike Peters
Mixed by Risteard O'Monaigh & Field Marshall Slug
Engineered by Gethyn Evans

Mike Peters & The Poets:
Mike Peters - Guitar & Vocals
Field Marshall Slug - Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar & Backing Vocals
Jules Jones - Piano, Keyboards & Backing Vocals
Brychan Llyr - Rhythm guitar, mandorin & backing vocals
Emyr Penlan - Bass Guitar & Backing Vocals

Mike Peters
"I wrote this song during the early stages of experimenting in my chapel studio in Wales. In many ways this song forms a bridge between my work with The Alarm and now. The arrangement has stayed true to my initial demo, (which it might be interesting to release at some stage). I worked the song out with a string arrangement which was inspired by John Paul Jones' work for Led Zeppelin. J.P.J. came to stay with me, with a view to producing the 'Change' album. Unfortunately, things didn't work out, but his ideas stayed with me. The main guitar riff was there right from the start and this became the foundation of the song. The whole arrangement finally came together when Jules found a way of bridging the verse to the chorus. From a live point of view this song has always worked as an opening to the show and we decided to cut this song first in the studio. It seems only fitting that lyrically and musically it should be the first track on 'Breathe'."

If I Cant Have You

There is no abstract available for this page revision.
